Labor Day Fire

Smoke filled the Skies East of San Marcos on Labor Day

At around 9:30 pm Monday evening a fire was reported by Gary Job Corps Staff in an unoccupied dormitory know as building 3301. The South Hays Fire Department responded to the initial alarm and found a 10,000 sq ft single story dorm with heavy fire and turbulent black smoke coming from the center of the building. South Hays fire crews initially made an interior fire attack, until part of a ceiling collapsed and burned through their fire hose. South Hays crews were forced to evacuate the structure and set up for defensive operations. A call for mutual aid from San Marcos and Kyle Fire Departments went out shortly after. The fire rapidly spread throughout the building and eventually caused several walls to collapse. Heavy equipment, brought in by Job Corps staff, was used to gain access the parts of the buildings deemed unsafe for fire crews. The fire was brought under control around 3:30 am and fire remained on scene through the night performing mop up. There were no reported injuries and the causes in under investigation by local fire marshals.

LCRA Grant Pays Big Dividens

Equipment Purchased with LCRA Grant Already Saving Lives

The South Hays Fire Department recently took delivery of rescue equipment purchased from a Lower Colorado River Authority local projects grant which helps them respond to a wider variety of specialized rescue incidents. The items included in the purchase were swift water rescue gear, high angle rescue equipment, ropes, harnesses, carabiners and pulleys. The new gear arrived just in time to be used for two high angle rescues in August 2008.

Texas Fire Academy Set to Expand Services in 2009

The Texas Fire Academy, a division of the South Hays Fire Department, has hired two part time individuals to assist with the expansion of the courses offered by the entity. "Our goal, since the beginning, is to provide an education experience above the rest" said Academy Director Chief David G. Smith Jr. "Our two new employees and the current new relationships being formed with Fire and EMS Departments across Central Texas will define the future of the Texas Fire Academy and ultimately increase the level of service we provide our members and customers."
